Vitamin D Deficiency may Contributes to Depression

Some studies showed a link between vitamin D deficiency that contribute to depression since vitamin D receptor identified in the brain’s area, which implicated in mood and behaviour. This hypothesis started when researchers found vitamin D receptor (VDR) presents in the brain. VDR in the brain’s area that involve in pathophysiology of depression. Furthermore, vitamin D and VDR activating enzyme 1-alpha-hydroxylase. This enzyme was identified in neural and glial cells. Also, the hypothalamus and the substantia nigra have the highest concentration of this enzyme.
